COURSE DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES

JANUARY 2010 THROUGH JUNE 2010

 

ABRASIVE BLASTING LEVEL 1 – Covers familiarization of blasting equipment, SSPC – Nace Blasting Specifications and inspection instrumentation.  Includes hands on blasting experience.  

 

AERIAL LIFTS - INTRODUCTION TO AERIAL LIFTS – Preliminary course, classroom presentation, for understanding the use and the safety requirements of Aerial Lifts. 

 

AERIAL LIFTS AND SCISSOR LIFTS - Safety class on lifts used on many job sites today. Class will offer hands-on operation of lifts with issuance of a user card upon completion. Class size is limited to 20 participants, so registering for the class is a must-first 20 participants registered will be enrolled in the class.

 

AIRLESS SPRAYING - Covers the technical information of airless sprayers. Instruction includes the proper tip selection and hands-on experience in the use of the equipment.  Prefer Respiratory Protection Class as a prerequisite.

 

AUTOMATIC TOOLS FOR DRYWALL FINISHING – Skills Enhancement class where students receive hands on instruction in the use of a bazooka and automated finishing tools. 

 

BITS, TIPS, TAPS, AND FASTENERS – The relationship between each will be discussed as well as the different substrates that require fastening.

 

BLUEPRINT READING LEVEL 1 - Journeyperson Skills Enhancement class dealing with the basic instruction on the make-up of blueprints and how to read, understand, and estimate from a set of drawings.

 

BLUEPRINT READING LEVEL 2 – This class continues on the basic concepts taught in the Blueprint Reading I Course.  Includes hands on exercises.  Blueprint Reading 1 is a prerequisite for this course.

 

COLD WEATHER SAFETY – Be prepared for the winter season.  We will discuss the hazards and conditions associated with working outside and how you can be better prepared for the cold weather.

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Course covers the effective ways to transmit effective communication skills, proper planning and organizational skills necessary for a successful job site.

 

CONFINED SPACE ENTRY - Participants learn to recognize a confined space, to evaluate the hazards of a confined space, how to take preventive measures to protect health and safety, and confined space rescue procedures.

 

CONTAINMENTS – Covers the necessary steps for erecting proper and safe containment. 

 

CONVENTIONAL SPRAYING - Covers the technical information of conventional sprayers. Instruction will be presented on the equipment and provides hands-on experience and operation of the equipment.  Prefer Respiratory Protection Class as a prerequisite. 

 

CRANE RIGGING CERTIFICATION - This applies to anyone who engages in the process of lifting, moving, and rigging loads with hardware and equipment used to attach a load to a crane (Rigger).  It will apply to anyone who communicates guidance and direction to a crane operator in lifting, hoisting, moving, or releasing a load (Signal Person).  The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation has approved the Crane Rigging Certification Program as offered by the Finishing Trades Institute of Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, and Vicinities.  An individual completing the Crane Rigging Certification Program will be classified as a Signalman and a Rigger 1.

  

CURTAINWALL LAYOUT - This class will help you in establishing reference points, control lines, and workable curtainwall tolerances.

 

DOOR AND HARDWARE - AUTOMATIC DOORS - This class is an overview of installation of automatic doors in the Glazing Industry to include adjustment, alignment, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliances.

 

DRYWALL FINISHING LEVEL 1 - LANHAM AREA - This course is all hands on, on long walls and office spaces using hand tools, using various materials, embedding tapes, wiping, and full wall skimming up to Level 3.

 

DRYWALL FINISHING LEVEL 1 - BALTIMORE AREA - This Drywall Course trains students to work as drywall finishers, who tape and finish the imperfections in the drywall to create a smooth surface for painting.  Instruction focuses on the proper use of a variety of hand tools for applying mud and tape to the installed drywall.  Students also learn methods for applying mud and tape to tough areas, such as joints and corners.  Additionally, students in the Drywall Course acquire skills on repairing and sanding drywall, as well as advanced skills on hand embedding and wiping tapes.

 

DRYWALL FINISHING LEVEL 2 -  Must have completed Drywall Finishing Level 1 or the equivalent to participate.  This course is all hands on, on long walls and office spaces, using tools to achieve Level 5 and various texture finishes.

 

EMBEDDING DRYWALL TAPES - 4 week course covers techniques for taping drywall by hand.  Includes hands on application to flat joints, butt hoists and angles.

 

FALL PROTECTION AWARENESS - The Fall Protection Awareness Course is designed to heighten awareness, knowledge, and the elimination of fall hazards. Class covers identifying fall hazards, types of fall protection, safe work practices, and personal protective equipment with an overview of the OSHA regulations. This course covers fall protection on Scaffolding, aerial lifts, suspended scaffolding, and also gives basic understanding of rescue methods. Class is applicable to all trades represented by District Council 51.

 

FOREMAN TRAINING – Informative class designed for Foremen or those wishing one day to be a Foreman.  Class covers key roles the Foreman plays, how to establish and maintain relationships with co workers, supervisors, and other trades as well as motivational techniques.

 

HAND TOOLS DRYWALL FINISHING UPGRADE - Journeyperson Upgrade class offering student hands-on experience in finishing drywall. This class covers embedding tape, block coat, skim coat, and point-up.

 

HOW TO CONDUCT A SAFETY MEETING - Learn effective methods that will assist in the presentation of a work site safety meeting.

 

KNOT TYING - Covers basic knots used in our Industry.  Includes hands on experience in the tying of knots.

 

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS – This class covers Material Safety Data Sheets, what they are, how they came about, and their usefulness in gaining safety information pertinent to our trades.  This class includes hands on exercises to simulate their usefulness.

 

MIRRORS - JOB LAYOUT AND MEASUREMENT - MIRROR MOUNTING METHODS - Class covers the layout measurement of mirror walls. When you complete this class you will be able to measure any wall efficiently and accurately for the installation of mirrors. 

 

OSHA 10 - CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY OUTREACH TRAINING PROGRAM (29 CFR 1926 Standards for Construction) - The program provides instruction on a variety of construction industry safety and health standards and is designed to heighten the awareness of workers to be able to identify hazards in their work sites. The program includes: Introduction to OSHA; Electrical Hazards; Fall Protection; Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment; Material Handling, Storage, Use and Disposal; Confined Space Entry; Hazard Communication and Identification; Scaffolding and Ladders; and Slips, Trips and Falls.  The training is a requirement on many jobsites.

 

PAINT FAILURES AND REMEDIES - Course to recognize substrates, metals, woods, masonry, and glasses, identifying coating failures and causes for failures, specifying primers, and compatible finish coats for durable repairs.

 

POWDER ACTUATED FASTENING SYSTEMS – A review of the safety requirements for HILTI and Ramset fastening systems.  User permits will be issued.

 

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION - Informative course designed to insure the protection of all respiratory hazards and the proper selection, use, and fit of a respirator.  Also covered are the types of respirators, selection of cartridges, and how to select the proper respiratory protection. Participants will learn how to properly clean and store a respirator.

 

RIGGING - Introduction to rigging equipment and materials used for rigging.  Course includes hands on training.  You must attend all classes at the location offered to successfully complete the course.

 

SAFETY GLAZING CODES – The Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials and 16CFR-1201, the Federal Standard that regulates the use of certified glazing materials will be discussed.

 

SCAFFOLD USER / ERECTOR / DISMANTLER COURSE - OSHA SCAFFOLD IN CONSTRUCTION STANDARD - Covers the OSHA standard requiring users to Scaffolds to be trained in the proper and safe use of Scaffolds. OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart “L” states: “The employer shall have each employee who performs work while on a scaffold trained by a person who is qualified in the subject matter to recognize the hazards associated with the type of scaffold being used and to understand the procedures to control or minimize those hazards.” This course covers the proper use of Scaffolding, recognition of the potential safety hazards on the job sites, and maintenance of equipment in a safe condition.  Includes hands on training.

 

SOLVENTS AND HAZARDOUS GLAZING MATERIALS - This is a safety awareness class to help us deal with the work place hazards and handling of chemicals in the workplace.

  

SPECIAL DECORATIVE FINISHES - Basic instruction creating by hand effects such as marbleizing, imitation graining, wood finishes, and special paint finishes such as sponging and ragging.  A different subject will be covered in each session. 

 

SPRAY PAINT CLASS -  Class covers airless spray, conventional spray, HVLP spray, and electrostatic spray.

 

STOREFRONT -  Class will demonstrate basic methods required for laying out different systems.

  

SWINGSTAGES - Course designed for beginning workers to Swingstages.  Course covers fall protection, set up rigging, building and dismantling, and proper storage and upkeep.

 

TRANSFER FIELD DIMENSIONS – Glazier class including transferring of control lines and benchmarks to maintain plumb, level, and square while laying out.

 

TRIM PAINTING - Covers skills enhancement for production work in trim painting.

 

VENETIAN PLASTER – 4 week course covers tools, materials, and applying venetian plaster to surfaces to achieve the desired effects.  This product is becoming more popular today as a durable decorative finish.

 

WALLCOVERING LEVEL 2 - An advanced wallcovering class for continued training designed for participants who have completed the Wallcovering 1 class or equivalent. 

 

WOOD FINISHING LEVEL 2 - Journeyworker Skills Enhancement Class, continuation of Woodfinishing 1, expands on techniques, materials, and hands on exercises.  Must have completed the Woodfinishing 1 Course or equivalent to participate in this class.
